Val d’Isere and Tignes Ski Resorts
Val d’Isere and Tignes make up the large Espace Killy ski area, covering two sides of a mountain, separated by a prominent ridge. As you may expect the area is named after Jean-Claude Killy. Val d’Isere and Tignes are directly linked without the need to use lifts. Both offer reliable snow over a long season. Runs in Val d’Isere go up to 3400 metres and in Tignes, higher still. Our view, after operating in the area for many years, is this is a winter wonderland for skiers like no other! Visit at least once, or regret it forever.
When British skiers describe their perfect ski resort it’s likely they have Val d’Isere in mind. Attracting more British winter sport enthusiasts than any other resort, you’d be right in thinking there are good reasons for Val d’Isere’s popularity.
The Espace Killy area is vast. That’s an important consideration. Both Tignes and Val d’Isere offer varied skiing with advanced skiers the best catered for. But given the size of the area there is enough diversity for any skier over a week or more. Beginners’ runs exist in both resorts. The pick of these are probably the nursery slopes closest to the resort centre in Val d’Isere. Skiers of any level can benefit from lessons. For example, beginners or those new to the Espace Killy can find ski lessons or skiing with a leader helpful in identifying the best areas to ski within the Espace Killy and beyond.
The ski area of Val d’Isere includes hamlets which provide further ski areas. These include Solaise, Bellvarde, and Le Fornet, and stretch along a road for 3 miles or more. As far as Tignes is concerned the highest two Tignes villages have more convenient access to the snow and the best selection of amenities.
Efforts made in recent years to draw tourists in, ensure Val d’isere is more atmospheric than it was pre-1992 Olympics and prettier too. Its historic centre is preserved while Tignes is purpose built. Tignes while scoring low on village charm more than makes up for it in providing easy access to a diverse range of runs.
The Snow School team operates in the Espace Killy ski area from October to the middle of December, and from April to the middle of May. We will make sure you leave having seen and experienced the best of the Three Valleys.
